Another mistake I encounter is homeowners extending driveways without considering thickness. I once worked with a family who had added space for an RV. The extension had been poured thinner than the original slab. Within a year, the heavier vehicle caused stress cracks across the new section. Seasonal timing also plays a role. I advise against pouring concrete during extremely hot or freezing conditions unless proper precautions are taken. I remember a midsummer project where temperatures spiked unexpectedly. Without careful curing, the surface could have dried too quickly and developed surface cracks. We used curing compounds and adjusted our schedule to start earlier in the day. The extra effort paid off; the finish held up beautifully.
I’m also candid with clients about maintenance. Even the best driveway isn’t maintenance-free. Sealing joints, cleaning stains promptly, and addressing small cracks early can extend lifespan significantly. Ignoring minor issues rarely saves money in the long run.
